The healthcare world is constantly changing, and the addition of new  shows this invention. Now, we can have a detailed overview of the new CPT codes for home visits, their impact on medical billing, and how healthcare providers can adjust to these transformations.

Cpt Codes For Home Visits And Helped Living Facilities In 2023

Introduction

New CPT codes have been introduced to use new technologies and the growing trend of providing care in non-traditional settings. These codes specifically address home visits and visits in assisted living facilities. For new patients, the codes range from 99341 to 99345, and for established patients, the codes range from 99347 to 99350. These codes cover services provided in private residences, temporary lodgings, and help living facilities. The place of service code for a home visit cpt codes is 12, while for assisted living, it is 13.

New CPT Codes for Home Visits and Assisted Living Facility Visits

Cpt Codes For Home Visits

The updated CPT codes for home visits are as follows:

New Patient Visit:

  • CPT: 99341
  • Description: Home visit for evaluating and managing an existing patient, involving a suitable medical history and examination and simple medical decision-making.

Established Patient Visit:

  • CPT: 99347
  • Description: Home visit for evaluating and managing an existing patient, involving a suitable medical history and examination and simple medical decision-making.

Prolonged Home or Residence E/M Visits

Extended visits to a patient’s home or residence can be reported using the appropriate E/M codes. Still, only someone in the same specialty and group can use CPT code 99292 to provide an extended home or residence E/M service.

Telehealth CPT Codes

There are new telehealth CPT codes available, including 99201 to 99215 for office or other outpatient visits and G0425 to G0427 for consultations, emergency departments, or initial inpatient services.

Requirements for Billing Home Visit CPT Codes 2023

The requirements for billing home visit codes in 2023 are as follows:

  • Home visits (CPT codes 99341-99350) are for evaluation and management services provided in a private residence or temporary lodging.
  • The physician must be physically present in the beneficiary’s home to bill these codes.
  • Assisted living visits (CPT codes 99348-99350) are for evaluation and management services provided in an assisted living facility.
  • The place of service code for assisted living is 13.
  • Prolonged home or residence E/M visits can be reported with the appropriate E/M codes, but only an individual in the same specialty and group can report CPT code 99292 for extended services.
  • There are also new telehealth CPT codes, such as 99201 to 99215 for office or other outpatient visits and G0425 to G0427 for consultations, emergency departments, or initial inpatient services.
  • Effective January 1, 2023, CMS implemented new G-codes for home health, which are informational only and will not be reimbursed by CMS. However, they will be mandatory for all home health agency (HHA) remote patient monitoring (RPM) programs starting July 1, 2023.

Requirements For Billing Home Visit Cpt Codes 2023

Benefits of Using Home Visit CPT Codes for Medical Billing

Using home visit CPT codes for medical billing offers significant benefits, including:

Accurate Reimbursement

By using specific CPT codes for home visits, healthcare providers can ensure they are reimbursed accurately for the services provided in a patient’s home or assisted living facility.

Improved Documentation

The requirement to use CPT codes for home visits encourages healthcare providers to maintain detailed and accurate documentation of the services rendered during the visit. This promotes better patient care and communication within the care team.

Flexibility in Care Delivery

Home visit CPT codes provide flexibility in care delivery, allowing healthcare providers to offer services in a patient’s private residence, temporary lodgings, or helping living facilities. This is especially beneficial for patients who have difficulty traveling to a healthcare facility.

Patient Care

By using home visit codes, healthcare providers can offer patient-focused care by meeting patients in their own homes. This allows for a more comfortable environment and enables providers to gain a deeper understanding of the patient’s living conditions and support system.

Telehealth Incorporation

The inclusion of new CPT codes, such as those for home visits, is a step towards integrating telehealth and home-based services into the healthcare system. This integration can enhance access to care, especially for individuals with chronic illnesses or limited mobility.

Impact on Reimbursement

Home health agencies may see changes in their reimbursement models due to the introduction of new CPT codes and G-codes. These codes allow for the billing of services such as chronic care management, remote patient monitoring, and remote therapeutic monitoring. Healthcare providers and billing departments need to become familiar with these codes and accurately document and code the services provided in non-traditional settings. By doing so, they can avoid reimbursement delays and potential problems with Medicare regulations.

Home visit CPT codes compare to office visit CPT codes in terms of reimbursement rates.

The reimbursement rates for CPT home visit and office visit CPT codes can vary depending on the specific code used and the insurance provider. However, in general, home-visit CPT codes may have higher reimbursement rates than office-visit CPT codes due to the additional time and resources required to provide care in a patient’s home or assisted living facility.

According to Nixon Gwilt Law, the reimbursement rates for home visit CPT codes are typically higher than office visit CPT codes. This is because home visits require additional time and resources, such as travel time and the need to bring equipment and supplies to the patient’s home. Additionally, home visits may be more complex than office visits due to the need to assess the patient’s living conditions and support system.

Conclusion

In 2023, there will be some exciting changes in the healthcare industry with the introduction of new CPT codes. These codes will specifically cater to home visits and visits in assisted living facilities. This shift will revolutionize the way healthcare services are delivered and billed. Healthcare providers must familiarize themselves with these new codes and understand how they will impact medical billing. By doing so, they can quickly adapt to these changes and ensure that their services are accurately billed and reimbursed.
